Get the Medical Care You Need After a Work Accident
Under Texas law, you can seek immediate treatment for any injury or illness that is work related. As a general rule, workers’ compensation benefits are paid directly to your health care provider, and are only paid for injuries or illnesses that can be demonstrated to be work related. You must choose a provider who is on the Workers’ Compensation Division’s Approved Doctor List (ADL). To determine whether a physician qualifies, go to www.tdi.state.tx.us/wc/information/.
If the doctor you are seeing becomes unavailable or if you don’t believe you are making adequate progress, you can request a change of treating physician. However, you must choose another doctor from the ADL and your request must be approved by the office handling your claim.
Because benefits are paid directly to the caregiver, your doctor may not bill you for services provided. Under the workers’ compensation laws, your doctor may not contact you in any way to try to collect a bill unless there has been a final determination that your injury was not work related.
